Have you been impressed with any art gallery/museum's design? If yes, is it because of the artworks inside or the building itself?
"Most of the museums I have been impressed by were because of the design of the building. Sure, you go there for the artwork, but the actual building definitely influences your perception of the art."
- Mr. J (Age 18-24)
"Interior design of the gallery makes the experience of viewing art great!"
- Mr. I (Age 25-34)
"V&A - the richness of history in the architecture and the usage of its interior spaces. The lighting in the spaces complements the space, both natural lights and lights for exhibits.
Tate modern- Love the large spaces and the contradictory simple interior with the industrial brick exterior.
Jewish museum - the usage of the natural light at certain areas is well executed and the interior is well designed with the long corridors."
- Mr. H (Age 25-34)
"Ambience in the museum, as well as historical value."
- Mr. G (Age 25-34)
"Yes. The historical pieces of artefacts, the paintings of the Asian civilisations, the bronze and wooden sculptures, all very impressive."
- Mr. F (Age 25-34)
"Yes."
- Mr. E (Age 25-34)
"Yes, because of the building, orientation of the building, the spaces inside, how successful is it to show the artworks."
- Miss. D (Age 25-34)
"Building."
- Mr. C (Age 25-34)
"Vitra Design Museum: Probably one of the memorable special experience designed by many designers/architects with the likes of Frank Gehry & Tadao Ando. Both impressed me with the use of natural light, and a functional play of positive & negative spaces creating a 3-dimentional "Chiaro-Scurotic" aura within a good mix of natural greenery with building material."
- Mr. B (Age 35-44)
"Yes, The musical lift in the museum. It was fun and unique, Especially in a gallery space where It is always quiet."
- Miss. A (Age 25-34)
What do you think about the current contemporary design of art galleries/museums?
For instance, do you prefer traditional or modern designs, do you prefer the concept of reusing old buildings to house an art gallery or build a new building, etc.
"For contemporary art I'd rather be in a very modern building where the architecture in itself shows a certain prowess and technical difficulty using raw and modern materials, such as glass, unpolished metals,.. On the other hand, for "classic art" and nature, I believe they are put more in evidence in historically old buildings (such as in Paris or Vienna)."
- Mr. J (Age 18-24)
"Both traditional looking and modern designs bring the best experience in different forms of art."
- Mr. I (Age 25-34)
"I've seen more of extensions constructed around museums for numerous reasons, such as preservation of the architecture or for weather conditions."
- Mr. H (Age 25-34)
"Both have their beauty, old museums for architecture and history, contemporary for design."
- Mr. G (Age 25-34)
"I prefer traditional designs, old buildings revamped to house art galleries. The sense of heritage is embodied in historical styled building. New modernized buildings have little connection to the past.."
- Mr. F (Age 25-34)
"I think I prefer more modern designs, but really if its done well in any building
/environment, then it is done well."
- Mr. E (Age 25-34)
"No specific preference for me as it can differ based on the purpose of the museum. Of course reusing old building add value."
- Miss. D (Age 25-34)
"Reuse old building."
- Mr. C (Age 25-34)
"2 points i'd like to see:
1) Blend of old tradition retained gives it value & cultural pride.
2) Equipped with modern technological advancements for eco-smart buildings to move towards architectural sustainability."
- Mr. B (Age 35-44)
"I am in a neutral ground, I like the reuse of old building with new technology incorporated, creating an obvious contrast between old and new."
- Miss. A (Age 25-34)
How could the experience in art galleries/museums be improved?
"Even though I am not answering your question directly, I would say that experiences in museums need not be improved, but rather the price/accessibility (so that museums are seen as approachable and easy of access). I sadly do not go to museums as often as I would hope, due to the fact that none of my friends go."
- Mr. J (Age 18-24)
"Size of space, more open spaces for different sort of art sets. E.g LACMA has a huge open area almost 3 storeys. And there's an huge sculpture that people can walk underneath it."
- Mr. I (Age 25-34)
"I believe that interaction will play a part in improving the experience. Also, with activity involving the visitor will help create a memorable experience as well."
- Mr. H (Age 25-34)
"Improve ambience to match with exhibit – melancholic for historic exhibits, fresh and bright for contemporary art, ambience should match the emotions that art prices evoke."
- Mr. G (Age 25-34)
"Definitely a more 3D immersive interactive experience. Virtual reality is the in thing now."
- Mr. F (Age 25-34)
"Crowd control is important, If it is too crowded it is not a pleasant experience."
- Mr. E (Age 25-34)
"It just needs to reach out to more people as many of them do not really understand what is art museum and what do they expect to see there."
- Miss. D (Age 25-34)
"Combination of all vital design elements such as lighting and space together with the right music hat creates a good atmosphere."
- Mr. C (Age 25-34)
"Meditative spaces to refresh one's mind would be good makes absorbing culture & art more enjoyable!."
- Mr. B (Age 35-44)
"I think interactive artworks are more memorable than just sculptures."
- Miss. A (Age 25-34)
