CASE STUDIES

Case studies aim to see how architects/designers use different design strategies to create an impressive experience for visitors.

I have chosen three art galleries/museums. Three different type of art galleries. The first one is Tate modern which is representing a contemporary public space for general visitors and tourists. The second one is Wellcome Collection, which is representing a specific museum for people who are interested in the connections between medicine, life and art. The last one is Royal Academy of Arts, it is representing an art academy which is similar to museums and galleries but more than that. It is promoting art and artists to visitors.

The reason why I chose 3 different types of art galleries to study is because I would like to explore whether different types of visitors in different kinds of art galleries/museums expect to have different kinds of experiences.

I want to explore:

About the building:

What was the precedent purpose of the building?

What was changed in the process of converting the building into an art gallery/museum?

What elements were considered while the designer was designing it? For instance, what material has remained, what structure has been changed or what kind of atmosphere they were building?

Is there any future refurbishment proposal for the art gallery/museum? Why does it have to be improved?

About visitors’ experience:

Which part of the art gallery/museum does visitor enjoy most?

What design elements impress visitors?

What changes visitors are looking forward to seeing in the future?
